Community Hospital - Grand Junction, CO

Various projects have been completed for Community Hospital since 1996. Blythe Group + co. has provided architecture including the renovation of the East Entrance of the hospital to provide an updated, efficient and functional workspace for hospital staff, as well as a comfortable and inviting first impression for patients and patrons.

On the exterior, natural sandstone and slate were used to ground the building in its local environment, while the building vocabulary was modernized with the introduction of expanses of metal and glass, updated floor forms, and the addition of sculptural baffle walls to partially screen the patient rooms from the parking lot.

Anchoring the project both aesthetically and functionally is a steel-framed, translucent- paneled entry canopy, which provides shelter above the vehicle drop-off areal.

Interior design included custom millwork, an artwork program dedicated to displaying the original works of local artists, appropriate lighting in staff and client areas, as well as custom acoustic design.

Blythe Group + co. also provided custom signage including brass lettering to compliment the textural use of the natural, rough-hewn limestone, as well as clear, easy to use way-finding methods to assist clients in navigating the campus.

Furniture design was also provided by Blythe Group + co. with the following considerations: ease of maintenance, client and staff health and well-being, as well as overall aesthetic coordination. Furniture and fixture packages were designated for the client and purchased in packages ensuring items could be replaced properly if needed in the future and deep financial incentive on group purchasing. Successful furniture coordination for Community hospital meant the incorporation of medical equipment in a comfortable environment. Furniture was also selected based on the ability to maintain a hygienic environment, with a view to longevity of the investment and with an overview of facility-wide coordination.

Colorado’s newest in-patient hospice center has been cleverly disguised as a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired dwelling where sick/ elderly can spend their last days with their families comfortably ensconced in a peaceful setting.

The Client did not want the care center to look like an institutional medical office. The Client also wanted it to fit in with the nearby Victorian structure, which serves as a hospice-run coffeehouse.

Blythe Group + co. made it happen by burrowing part of the facility into a hillside so it appears to be a single story from the front. We minimized its size with pillars, dormer windows, high and low gables, and a multi-leveled roof line.

The Client wanted every square foot to feel homey. The challenge was making the decor beautiful while still meeting hospital code: Fabrics must be fire-retardant. Wood is limited to 10 percent of any wall. Floors in patient rooms must be vinyl. Each Patient room is a little different. They all have wood-look floors with inlaid patterns. They have pale lemon-colored linens, puffy comforters, and chocolate-colored throws. Each room also has different fabrics in built-in headboards, furniture, and pillows.
